Stu McEwing
Writer. World Builder.

Some stories start with a question you can’t shake. Mine keep starting with the same one. What happens to ordinary people when the systems holding their world together stop working?
I was born in the UK and moved to New York in the mid 2000s. I spent about five years in and around the city, and I still miss it the way it was then. These days I write from the mountains, a long way from any skyline. Maybe that distance is why the city keeps turning up in my fiction.
I’m a writer and world builder, and I’m working on two series. I write technothrillers that earn their darkness. The stories stay grounded in the texture of real life, where the stakes feel personal before they become universal. I build the world first, then I let the characters pay for living in it.
“Every world I build runs on different rules. In all of them, the characters pay full price.”
The Severed America is a post EMP thriller set in New York City in October 2021. Seventeen year old Kimberly Sterns lives alone on the Upper West Side when every electrical system in the city fails at 7:03 PM on a Friday. The questions that follow are about power, grief, and who decides what comes next. Book One, The Severed City, is out now.
Wild Space is a science fiction thriller set in a Sol system that never got any bigger. Earth and Mars sit in a cold war, chrome is everywhere, and four very different people end up tied to one smuggler and his stolen rig. I’m writing Book One now.
Alongside the fiction, I’m building a tabletop RPG set in The Severed America. It’s a pen and paper game where players walk the same streets, face the same factions, and wrestle with the same moral dilemmas as the characters in the books. Stories you read and stories you live.
This site is where I document the work. The writing, the worldbuilding, the process. Think of it as thinking in public.
